In summer we tend to wear short-sleeved or sleeveless cotton safari shirts, day and night...

Should the night get cool we will put on a long-sleeved shirt.

Another reason to bring a long-sleeved cotton shirt is for protection against mosquitoes!

Mosquitoes like to bite exposed fleash so with a long sleeve they are forced to go for the hand or head and you can then see them and deal with them!

In winter we tend to layer our clothing. In the morning I will wear a T-shirt, a long-sleeved cotton shirt and then my safari jacket and maybe even my safari vest.

Jennifer wears a long-sleeve shirt with a short-sleeve over this and then her safari-vest and safari jacket. As the day progresses and the heat starts to build, we then start to remove the safari jackets and if need be the safari vests or long-sleeve shirt.

At night I will wear another T-shirt with a long-sleeve sweat-shirt.

How many shirts should you take with you? If we are going on a fourteen-day safari in summer we take seven short sleeve shirts with.

We then do one batch of washing at the half-way mark. We will wash underwear, shirts and shorts. This saves us carrying too much luggage!

When you purchase the above items try and get cotton clothing and not synthetic. Stick to neutral colors like beige, brown, khaki, olive, grey or combinations thereof.

We have seen some people advising not to get camouflage shirts or pants - there is nothing wrong with these mottled patterns or two-tones!

I wear only two-tone cotton shirts on safari in summer...

The Kruger Park, Etosha and Kgalagadi shops sell a wide variety of cotton shirts, including T-shirts with humorous messages...

In Madikwe Game Reserve each lodge has a small curio shop where they sell, shirts, jackets, beanies and other clothing items.

"It's 764 pages of the most amazing information. It consists of, well, everything really. Photography info...area info...hidden roads..special places....what they have seen almost road by road. Where to stay just outside the Park...camp information. It takes quite a lot to impress me but I really feel that this book, which was 7 years in the making, is exceptional."            - Janey Coetzee, South Africa
