Just 2km off the N14 and only 15 km from the town of Kuruman makes Red Sands Country Lodge an ideal stopover on your way to or from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is neatly tucked between the Kuruman hills and camelthorn trees.
The lodge is built on a game reserve so there are many animals to view either from the comfort of you chalets or on a drive round the property.
This is not a 5 star lodge but it is comfortable and clean and has everything you may need for a relaxed get away.
When we arrived, we felt like we were still in the Kalahari with the red sand dunes and Oryx, just the vegetarian was a lot greener. It is a fabulous family get away with plenty to do.
The main building is split in two, with a restaurant and bar on the right as you walk in and the reception and breakfast area on the left. Both buildings lead onto an open patio.
From the patio, lush green lawns take you down to the pool and kiddies play area.
There are two conference rooms, one in front of the main building and the other slightly to the right of the restaurant.
The restaurant is a good size and seating is comfortable - you can sit on the covered veranda, open patio or in the main restaurant.
The fully licensed bar area is at the back of the restaurant and has good selection of wines to choose from.
Meals during the week are from an a la cart menu but Saturdays and Sundays a buffet is displayed for both lunch and dinner.
We had a superb Sunday dinner with a good variety to choose from; plenty of salads, oxtail stew, roast lamb, chicken, veg and then the wonderful display of desserts.
Breakfast is in a smaller restaurant near reception, eggs and bacon are ordered but the cereals, yogurt, fruit and juices are buffet style.
