Benoni to Kgalagadi - Olifantshoek to Vanzylsrus.

The first pass of Langeberg Mountain range.

The first pass of Langeberg Mountain range.

On our trip to the Kgalagadi we decided not to follow the conventional route of either Hotazel or Upington but took a short right 3 Km outside of Olifantshoek.

This route took us through the Langeberg Mountain range and then directly to Vanzylsrus.

Road condition.
by: Lourens Benoni.

The road from Vanzylsrus to Askham is still not tarred. Badly corrugated according to visitors encountered at Askham. The road from Olifants to Vanzyls is mostly sand with only the section through Langeberg CorRugated. Malopo route being track most of the way pleasant to drive but for the last couple of kilometers. Only drawback is the amount of gates and possible 4 x 4 needed during heavy rain.

Route desicion.
by: Lourens

Dave, It depends on what you want out of your trip. We have traveled the other two routes so many times in the past that we wanted something else. There is also a route from Kathu over Debeng that gets you either the R31 Hotazel or keeping left at some junctions to the rout that we took.

What condition is this new road in?
by: Simon

We found the Kuruman - Hotazel - Vanzylrus - Askam route to be unpleasant - only half the road was tarred and the other half is very rough (vanzylsrus to Askham) as people speed along and cause many corrugations. We drove this route in 2014 but heard it may be all tarred now?
